Making a Move as a Senior

When seniors are going through the relocation process, taking the necessary time to plan is key to a successful move. Moving out of a home that you have lived in most of your adult life, can be stressful. Here are some tips to help you enjoy a successful move later in life.

Reasons for Moving Later in Life

There are many reasons why you might decide to relocate as you age. Maybe you want to live closer to family. Maybe you have retired and you want to relocate somewhere you’ve always dreamed of living, but past work obligations made it impossible. Maybe you lost your spouse and want to downsize or just need a change. Regardless of your reason, moving is always a challenge, and it can be even harder to relocate and settle into a new place or city once you are older.

Research Options

Young adults between the ages and 20 and 29 relocate the most. A person can move 10 times in their lifetime, but what if you are a senior and are in the process of relocating? During your youthful years, you probably moved for college or a new job which gives you opportunity to make friends. When moving later in life, research is key to settling in comfortably. Healthcare, churches, social groups, gyms or places to exercise, libraries, community centers, and other groups to meet people are important. Make sure you do the research necessary to feel at home.

Wants and Needs

Finding a Realtor who can assist with your wants and needs is a good idea as well. When you were young you probably were interested in the amenities of a neighborhood, number of bedrooms for your family and to be near good schools, but as you age, different things become a priority. A one story home that is close to healthcare might take precedence over having a home close to your work. It is important that you acknowledge your current needs and what you’ll need in the future. Finding a Realtor who is patient and knowledgeable will help take the pressure off you.
