People & Lifestyle

Houston Heights attracts a myriad of residents drawn to its central location, proximity to amenities, and established neighborhood feel. This eclectic crowd ranges from young professionals to retirees, creative types in particular. The Heights offers a unique blend of urbanity and suburban solace, maintaining quiet, well-lit streets lined with mature trees while staying close to the action at the heart of Houston.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

The historic Houston Heights shopping district winds down 19th Street, and here you’ll find an eclectic selection of boutiques and eateries. Surrounded by Victorian homes and iconic Houston venues, this strip includes everything from vintage apparel to art galleries. Here, you can hunt for kitschy antiques and apparel at Retropolis or grab a coffee to-go from Amsterdam Co., a chic contemporary coffeehouse with specialty items.

To spend a day in the Texas sun, the Heights Hike and Bike Trail is one of the area’s most popular outdoor destinations. The full length of the trail stretches 4.6 miles, and the paved trail makes it broadly accessible. When you need a night on the town, head to The Heights Theater, a restored 20th-century movie theater that now hosts events and live music performances.

Things to Do

Houston Heights is home to numerous recurring events that encourage people to gravitate to the neighborhood. Each year, the Houston Art Car Parade celebrates rolling art and is the largest event of its kind throughout the world. With artworks crafted by artists, families, and local organizations, this parade attracts up to 300,000 spectators. Annually, The Heights transforms into a block party along 19th Street for the White Linen Night Festival. As its name suggests, guests arrive dressed in their pressed white linens, and the evening is filled with street food served by local vendors, mesmerizing art displays from Houston galleries, and live music and entertainment until the early hours of the morning. During the holiday season, Houston Heights puts on a light show that involves the entire community. Seemingly overnight, the neighborhood is draped in lights and tinsel, garland and gold. Lights in the Heights is a festive celebration where historic homes dress in their season’s best for the annual decorating competition, which extends awards such as “Most Wattage” and “Most Traditional” to participants. Additionally, porches become stages for live music performances while guests meander the city streets to soak in the lights. Each month, the First Saturday Arts Market attracts artists and collectors to The Heights to hunt for artisanal creations.

Houston Heights has a plethora of parks that, combined with Houston’s balmy temperatures, make it easy to get outside. Take the kids to Donovan Park for an afternoon playing on its railroad-themed playground, or play a game of tennis or basketball on the courts at Halbert Park.
